SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING PLAN

2019

Discontinuation of black trays (they are not detectable for separation in recycling).

Removal of PVC in the rigid cover.
Substitution with PET (PVC is a vinyl polychloride and in its disposal phase it’s highly toxic because it frees chloride into the atmosphere).

Reduction of microns
in hard covers and bases.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS 2022

ENDING POVERTY

We play our part in contributing to our region’s economic development, helping to slow the de-population of rural areas.

We employ over 668 people, 10% more than in 2021.

ZERO HUNGER

We allocate our surplus stocks to NGOs and local Food banks.

We have donated our products to 12 charities.

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Our ORP policy means a healthy and safe work environment for our staff.

We have been awarded the Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems Certification ISO 45001.

In 2022, we rolled out the self-protection plan at our Sant Miquel de Balenyà plant. We ramped up specific risk prevention training for temporary staff.

Having completed the NAOS Strategy by cutting down on the amount of sugars and salt as much as possible, in 2022 we continued doing our utmost to improve and clean up our recipes, getting rid of certain additives or replacing them with alternatives in the form of ingredients.

QUALITY EDUCATION

We invest in training people. KREAS certified centre for professional training.

Dual-training in the meat industry with a certificate of professionalism starting in March 2022 and running until March 2023 for a team of 17 employees.
In 2022, we delivered 79 training courses to factory staff, middle managers, technical staff, administrative staff and managers.
We have an open online training platform with 117 training modules.

GENDER EQUALITY

An equality plan was introduced to ensure non-discrimination of employees for reasons of gender, guaranteeing the same opportunities and remuneration policies.

We have updated and renewed our Equality Plan and we have a team working continuously on equality policies with the company's RLT (Employee Representatives).

CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION

We have two physical, chemical and biological wastewater treatment plants.

In 2022, we undertook a project to inject pure oxygen into the biological reactor, which, apart from streamlining the purification process, cut down on electricity consumption by 56%.

DECENT EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

In 2022, MONELLS’ sales rose by +3.47% (kg) while the market for processed meat products fell slightly by -0.9% (kg).

In 2022, 57 permanent contracts were signed.

INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

We have teamed up with research institutes to work on trailblazing research and innovation projects.

In 2022, we invested €4.4 million and launched a new industrial line of bacon strips that incorporates artificial vision, has a production capacity of 3 million kg and uses ECO-DESIGN packaging that provides maximum rigidity with minimum plastic, greater visibility and impact—taking up 18% less space on the shelf—as well as trays with 80% recycled material. In 2022, we saved 95,958 kg of plastic by redesigning our packaging, minimising the impact of kg plastic/kg product of our products.

RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION AND USE

We renewed the RETRAY (formerly known as ECOSENSE) certificate that guarantees the recycling chain of our PET containers, fostering a circular economy model in the PET thermoformed packaging industry. In 2022 we recycled a total of 282,620 kg.

We rolled out a new type of segregation at the plant—the SRF (Solid Recycled Fuel)—so now part of the non-usable waste goes towards energy recovery, cutting down on the amount of waste sent to landfill.

ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

We strive to improve the energy efficiency of our production plants and promote the reduction of water consumption and waste generated, while using recycled and recyclable materials.

In 2022, we launched two energy saving projects that led to a reduction in the energy consumed while preventing the emission of 46,431.89 kg CO2 into the atmosphere.

LIFE OF LAND ECOSYSTEMS

Animal welfare is at the heart of what we do, which is why we have agreements with our meat suppliers with a view to certifying the methodologies in their operating systems with the international Animal Welfare Quality standard.

We closed 2022 with 91% of our total suppliers being Animal Welfare-certified.

ALLIANCES TO ACHIEVE OBJECTIVES

Embutidos Monells is part of trailblazing sustainable material research and innovation projects, working with research institutions, suppliers and other manufacturers.

In 2022, we were still involved in the following projects: SOFLEX Project. This project started in 2021, teaming up with IRTA, AIMPLAS and suppliers to look into the use of recyclable mono-materials in thermoforming machines for the packaging of cured - matured cold meats.

ECOCUIT Project. This project got underway in 2021 in close collaboration with IRTA and FECIC, among others, to research new options with a view to improving the preservation and sustainability of packaged ready-to-eat organic meat products.
